I feel like every year on this date there's the conversation about changing the points system - jimbro83
Because it’s needed but the league and PA never discuss it. Sort of like LTIR and other issues that get swept under the rug. |

With all the talk about the teams record number of wins and points, was there ever a day this season the team wasn't in 1st place in the Metro ? I don't think there was |

Another reason to make regulation wins worth 3 points. So teams don’t play for ties in the 3rd period - TPC
Listen boss, you're picking up what I'm putting down. If I ran this stupid league, we'd go back to the 1-8 playoff format and adopt the 3-2-1-0 point system. but we're smart the NHL is not. |

Silly goose. The Natioanl TV is the Leafs-Panthers, the team that clinched a playoff spot weeks ago. |

This was surprising to see on nhl.com
NHL sets attendance record for 2023-24 season
Considering Arizona plays in a 5,000 seat arena. I guess they have the same attendance they had in an 18,000 seat arena

The league loves this system, how many times has a playoff spot been decided on the last game of the season? Rangers Flyers years back.
It makes for more excitement thats for sure. |

While I agree on both changing the point system and the stupid divisional playoff format, if you look at the conference standings as they currently sit, the matchups would be the same in the 1-8 format |

Right, but I'm talking league wide. Right now the Jets and Avs would play each other under the current format. 1-8: The match ups would be:
Winnipeg vs Nasville
Colorado vs Edmonton
The Colorado Edmonton series would be amazing. |

Yep fully agree. Just thought it was interesting that the way the east standings fall it works out the same either way.
What sucks is that in all likelihood the top two teams in the league will face each other in the 2nd round. Under the 1v8 setup we wouldn't see Carolina until the conference final |

Yeah apparently they welched on so many hotel bills that all the hotels in NHL cities banded together and demanded that the Coyotes pay them up front with a certified check if they wanted to stay in any of the hotels.
Meruelo probably would have put the Coyotes up in the Commack Motor Inn at the hourly rate when they played on the island if he could have |

Exactly. That's part of the problem with the playoff format. HL wants to force division rivalries. Let the playoff hate evolve naturally. |

Also the loser point as Islanders have 16 of them but have the same amount of wins as Buffalo |

Jan...any reason why President's Cup wasn't presented to NYR after the game? Thought it was tradition, and for as long as I can remember, this is 1st time that it didn't happen. Every yr. there was always talk about if the team touch/didn't touch it - rrentz
The superstition is with the conference win and the Prince of Whales trophy. I *think* it'll be awarded before the start of game 1. Someone on here I'm sure remembers.

What's odd to me is they've forced these divisional rivalries in the playoffs yet we only play our divisional "rivals" 3-4 times each in the regular season with the (somewhat) new "play everyone twice" schedule that the NHL has implemented.
It makes the playoff rivalries seem even more forced. Compare that to when we played the divisional rivals 8 times per year |
