I've decided to try a new series this year. Every Monday or Tuesday I'll be posting what I'd like to call, 'The Prospect Notebook.' In each blog, much like Elliot Friedman's 30 Thoughts, I'll jot down some note worthy information, insight and brief thoughts on everything from the upcoming Draft, big time prospects and the world of junior hockey.
Without further adieu:
1. Lost in all the
Max Domi fanfare was an impressive first game for his fellow first rounder, taken one pick later at 9th Overall,
Bo Horvat. He set up Domi's first goal and added one of his own.
Check out this vid on the two from their Home Opener.
2. It's not often that draft-eligible players (usually second years in junior) get named Captain of their respective teams. The Kelowna Rockets named
Colton Sissons their new leader this week, as one of the top rated forwards out of the WHL. I don't know Sissons at all, but this tells me a lot about his character.
3.
Myles Bell was recently traded to Kelowna. I'm surprised that he was, not to mention that he's back on the ice. I hope for his sake he can put past issues behind him. I'm still surprised that no NHL Teams took a chance on him in the later rounds last year.
4. The Blackhawks sent back their 2011 First Round Prospects,
Mark McNeill and
Phillip Danault. Yet, they snagged
Brandon Saad at 43rd Overall in the Second Round and he's still with the Big Club. I thought he was closer to NHL Ready than some expected (a year), but there's big whispers that he could be with the Hawks when they open their season.
5. I had heard whispers that
Michael Sgarbossa would get a longer look with San Jose, but was recently released and re-assigned to Sudbury. With a full season, he and
Josh Leivo could form one of the top lines in the OHL points wise.
6.
Emotional return for Ben Fanelli. It's been almost two full years since that scary incident that has probably been shown on every sports station in Canada.
7. Most surprised to see
Jared Knight back in London so soon. I was positive that he had a good shot at a Top Nine spot in Boston over Caron. Is he the Knights Captain this year?
8. I feel like I should ask every player I interview what song they listen to before a game.
Olli Maatta, London Knights Dman and likely First Round Pick in 2012 told me he likes Beyonce. Who's gonna be the most listened to; Katy Perry or Ke$ha?
9. Another question I'm going to try asking more players: Why did you choose the CHL over the NCAA?
10. Being at the JLC was amazing this past weekend. Probably the best experience I've had in a Junior Hockey rink. But parking behind the arena was crazy expensive. What the heck?
