One Rumour that is Not Staaling

I put many rumours out there, and while we truly never know what will ACTUALLY occur, this one has grown a bit bigger...And it has as much to do with Carolina as it does Edmonton. The Oilers are in a cap spot right now. No two ways about it.

Stoll is an RFA, Pitkanen is an RFA, and there are some key role guys that are RFAs and UFAs as well. The player I see most likely moving out of Edmonton is Staios. He is a solid priced player signed for a few more years. I have not heard as of yet the names being thrown back towards Carolina, I was told that the untouchables are only Gagner and Cogliano.

For Rent...Commodore 64-Cheap

The Carolina Hurricanes are definitely going through somewhat of an identity crisis these days. The latest name that is popping up on the Rumour Mill is that of Mike Commodore. Mike is a pending UFA due for a nice little raise, but as of now he is extremely affordable at 1.3M. To a team looking for a guy that has proven himself to be a very strong playoff performer, there is no doubt the Canes could get some serious value back.

Last night I was hearing the Sharks were very interested and then as of the last hour the Leafs name surfaced. Watching the Leafs play last night, I believe that Mike could be exactly what the doctor ordered. I still see the Leafs as a playoff team. I know I may be in the minority, but the fact that they are still in the hunt (even if it is largely due to picking up OTL points) says something about this team that has been hurt often and struggling all year. Wellwood needs to step it up, but I believe he will, and Bell as well is starting to show signs of being a diamond in the rough. I really could see Bell being a factor.

What to do in Tampa?

It is all slowly boiling over in Tampa. They are a one line team and as a wise man just said to me, "The other players aren't playing enough to get any sense that they are part of this team." I am hearing that Detroit has interest in Prospal. He is the obvious choice as far as moving a player to build toward the future. However this from a former GM last night, "I still have to tell you, despite how crazy it would appear on the surface, Vinny may have to be moved to truly rebuild a team that makes economic sense for this ownership." Jay Feaster is, in my opinion, one of the best GMs in the NHL and he is (I am certain) looking at EVERY option while the ownership direction continues to blur the projections for next year's budget.

Hossa to Pitt (e2)

Yeh, indeed. The pending UFA would pretty much be the ideal fit in Pitt. I am told that Mario wants this and Sid is quietly whispering for a scoring winger...Hossa could become Crosby's Kurri pretty damn quick.

More tomorrow as we really kick in the preview for the deadline!
