Toronto Maple Leafs 2023 first rounder Easton Cowan continues to prove those who said his selection at #28 overall last June was wrong, as the 18-year-old winger leads the Ontario Hockey League in playoff scoring with 30 points (9 goals, 21 assists) and after being named OHL Player of the Week.
Cowan has 11 points (2 goals, 9 assists) in first three games for the London Knights in the OHL Championship against Oshawa, who lead 3-0 and could advance to the Memorial Cup with a win on Wednesday.
After interviewing with the Maple Leafs on the weekend, Craig Berube (according to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff) is heading to Winnipeg to interview for the vacant Jets head coaching job. Berube reportedly is high on the list with the New Jersey Devils, as is former Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe.
Toronto reportedly has interviewed former Sharks bench boss Todd McLellan, but there have not been any confirmed reports of any other scheduled interviews. If the Leafs have interest in Carolina’s Rod Brind’Amour, the Hurricanes extending the series with the New York Rangers on Monday was not good news, especially if Berube or other candidates are not interested in waiting.
There still could be interest in former Hawks and Panthers head coach Joel Quenneville, but that would depend on the Leafs getting clearance of his availability from NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.
