The Flyers have signed free agent winger Arron Asham to a multi-year contract. Last season, he started 77 regular season games for the Devils (six goals, 10 points, 84 penalty minutes) and dressed in all five of the Devils' conference quarterfinal playoff games against the Rangers.

I always thought the 30-year-old Asham was an underrated player during his time with the Islanders. He's a physical player and agitator who can play on different lines and has a modicum of offensive ability as well.

However, with the club already over the salary cap, Asham's signing at least temporarily worsens the situation. I don't yet know how much the Flyers signed him for. Last season he earned $700,000 with the Devils.

In addition, the the Flyers have extended GM Paul Holmgren's contract through the 2011-12 season.
