Sid the Kid and Glove Toss

One thing that came out of yesterday's 6-3 Flyers win over Pittsburgh was that for the second time this season, the Flyers held Sidney Crosby to without a point.

Yes, the Pens were playing for the 7th time in 11 days, no denying they were tired, but even on his worst nights, Sid the Kid is usually good for a point or two against the Flyers.

So, that's a very commendable effort by the Flyers on Crosby, who matched up against Mike Richards, most of the game.

The win gave the Flyers sole possession of 2nd place in the Atlantic Division.

“Yeah we wanted, definitely, a better effort," Crosby said. "These are big games standings wise, and these are always intense games, you should be ready for these ones. We knew that they had a strong power play, wanted to stay out of the box, but we got into some trouble early and never really got out of it.”

Sid was asked about how much more competitive the Flyers have been since the Penguins routinely kicked their ass back in that dreadful 40th Anniversary season of 2006-07.

“I think their younger guys have developed, there’s been a lot of changes personnel-wise for their team, but as far as our team is concerned that shouldn’t change anything," re replied. "We have a lot of the same guys too. We just didn’t do the job here today.”

Phantoms are holding a "Scott Hartnell Glove and Mitten Toss" tonight at the Spectrum in honor of Scott's glove toss a few weeks ago against Tampa Bay. Hartnell is grinning 'n bearing it, as they say, but he is clearly not happy that this "glove toss" business continues to hound him.

He didn't like Joffrey Lupul tossing a glove at him and knocking his breakaway shot out of the air in practice 2 weeks ago. Now me, I like anything that stirs the pot and creates tension in the dressing room to keep guys on edge.

Lupul told me a few weeks ago, “Anytime he takes a breakaway, there’s going to be a glove thrown."
