Luca Sbisa doesn't sleep with the fishes ... but he'll begin taking his nightly repose in Lethbridge.
The long-awaited announcement finally came today. The FLyers' fine, young defenseman was going to be among the cap casualties once Danny Briere came back. Even though Biere remains 3 weeks away, Sbisa has not been playing - sitting 6 of the last 7 games.
He just turned 19. He had to play. So, GM Paul Holmgren sent him back. Frankly, it was overdue. Either player him or send him somewhere else to play. But don't on the kid and the Flyers let this drag on longer than it should have.
“I spent a lot of time over the past month or so preparing him for this,” Holmgren told me, "even though I didn’t know a date in my own mind if this was the direction we wanted to go. He’s aware of the thought process. He knows he needs to play.
"When I talked to him today, he seemed okay. I talked to him about having the right attitude and told him this would only work if he had the right attitude. He had a big smile on his face and he said, ‘I know and I want to play.’ ”
btw: his $875,000 salary comes off the cap and will help toward the Danny Briere Fund to get the center back onto the roster ... but it certainly won't be enough ... more moves must come to reinstate Briere in 3 weeks ...
