Wrapup
My recap is now available on
Philadelphiaflyers.com.
Note: After the game, there were scoring changes on the Flyers' third and fourth goals of the game (there were three scoring changes in all -- only the Claude Giroux goal and Simon Gagne penalty shot stood as originally credited).
3rd period synopsis
At the 1:06 mark, Claude Giroux (who is having an outstanding game) feeds Scottie Upshall cross-ice near the crease. Denis stops Upshall's attempt to elevate the puck on the backhand.
On the net shift, Ryan Parent turns over the puck but Martin Biron stops Mike Comrie's attempt from the slot.
Flyers 2 - Islanders 1: At the 6:15 mark of the third period. Jack Hillen carried the puck over the blueline and dropped the puck to Andy Hilbert, who snapped a shot past Biron from the top of the circle for his 10th goal of the season. Bergenheim drew the secondary assist.
Flyers 3 - Islanders 1: Arron Asham took the puck away from Mitch Fritz and fed over to Scottie Upshall, whose 7th goal of the season went in off his skate at the 9:23 mark.
Flyers 4 - Islanders 1: Simon Gagne was awarded a penalty shot at the 10:17 mark when he was impeded on a breakaway by Chris Campoli. On the shot attempt, Gagne moved in on Denis and got the goalie to commit first. Rather than go his favorite forehand-to-backhand move, Gagne moved left and slid home the puck on the forehand to extend the Flyers lead to 5-1. The goal was Gagne’s 22nd of the season.
The Flyers finally get their first powerplay of the game at the 14:51 mark as Brendan Witt goes off for hooking. At 16:39, Carter goes off for hooking to cancel out the remainder of the advantage.
2nd period synopsis
Fairly dull first half of the middle period, with a lot more play along the walls. Shots are 7-4 Islanders through the first 12 minutes.
Simon Gagne takes a drop pass from Mike Richards in the left circle and snaps a shot on goal at 14:47. Good save by Yann Denis.
At the 18:02 mark, Sean Bergenheim gets loose on a breakaway over the middle. He tries to go five-hole on Biron but can't find any room.
Shots were 11-7 Islanders (27-24 NYI through two periods). Scoring chances were 3-2 Islanders. One item of concern: The Flyers have 11 failed clears through two periods.
1st period synopsis
In the opening minute of play, Mike Richards circles hard over the middle from the half boards (Mikael Renberg used to excel at that move) and creates a scoring chance for himself. Yann Denis fumbles the rebound but recovers.
Flyers 1 - Islanders 0: At the 5:00 mark, Claude Giroux scored his second NHL goal and first at the Wachovia Center. The rookie hustled into the zone, corralled the puck near the goal line and passed it back to Scottie Upshall in the circle. Giroux moved to the slot as Upshall skated over the middle. Upshall fed Giroux, who had a virtual slam dunk.
On the ensuing faceoff (offically 5:06) Arron Asham dropped the gloves with Tim Jackman. Asham scored a KO victory in a long bout, eliciting a loud cheer from the fans.
Flyers 2 - Islanders 0: At 5:44, Joffrey Lupul carried the puck over the blueline and fed cross-ice to Jeff Carter, who snapped his 35th goal of the season home from the right circle.
Martin Biron erases a horrible turnover by Andrew Alberts with a good stop in close.
At the 10:30 mark, Randy Jones atones for his own giveaway with a nice shot block on a Sean Bergenheim offering.
Scottie Upshall is whistled off for an offensive zone roughing minor as he tries to throw a hit behind the net. On the delayed penalty, the Islanders' Kyle Okposo comes close to scoring off the rush. Biron can't quite cover the rebound by play is blown dead. A half-second later, Bergenheim puts the puck over the goal line, leading to a scrum around the net. Upshall still gets the only penalty. Time of the penalty 14:07.
On the ensuing PK, the Islanders win a pair of draws cleanly and snap point shots in on Biron. He handles both (the Islanders' 10th and 11th shots of the period) cleanly. As the penalty expires, Biron gloves down New York's fourth shot of the man advantage.
Shots were 17-16 Flyers, chances 8-8 (Carter led all players with three). Faceoffs were 12-9 Flyers (Richards was 6-for-7). Hits were 7-5 Flyers. Flyers had 7 giveaways to 5 by the Islanders.
