I talked to Mike Richards and Braydon Coburn, who teamed up on Richie's historic 2-man shorthanded goal today at MSG.
Here's what they had to say:
“Obviously, it’s not something you try for,” Richards told me. “You pick your opportunities when you get it.”
“I saw Drury kinda creeping in to hold the puck and Cobie made a good play to get it to me,” he said. “It was a little bit of a gamble to get it by [Drury]. With me leaving the zone, it would have been a 5-on-2. But I had confidence in him and he made a good play.”
Coburn told me, “We got lucky that the puck got in the lane. Richie saw Drury move over and was calling for it. I had my head down and heard him and laid it in there.”

NEW YORK _ We thought it might be a record and according to Elias Sports Bureau, they believe it is a record, at least in the modern era of hockey.
The Flyers' Mike Richards scored his third, career 2-men shorthanded goal this afternoon at Madison Square Garden. No other NHLer has ever done that.
His second period goal gave the Flyers a 3-0 lead over the Rangers.
All three goals have come on the road. He first achieved the mark on Oct. 22, 2005 in Toronto, then duplicated the feat on Oct. 10, 2007 at Vancouver.
In this game, Richards took a breakaway pass from Braydon Cobrun that split Chris Drury and Michal Rozsival before beating goalie Henrik Lundqvist.
