Need to clarify here ... Briere said Tuesday at Washington would be the earliest he would now come back. Target date of Feb. 25 remains, but Tuesday is the next early possibility ... This weekend is out ... my bad if I misled anyone here ...

**

Lotta people wondering when Danny Briere is coming back and whether his pronouncement on Tuesday that he might play this weekend was legit.

It's not. Briere flat out said after today's practice that he still has pain and ruled himself out for the weekend, pointing once again to the date the Flyers released a while ago - Feb. 25 against the LA Kings.

You just know Briere would love to play tomorrow night against his former Buffalo Sabres teammates, but it ain't gonna happen.

And while we're on Briere, I asked him what he thought about Nathan Gerbe, another diminutive player, like himself, whose had to battle long odds to make the NHL roster because of his size - 5-5.

The rookie is playing on a top line in Buffalo.

“I think I saw a highlight [video] about him,” Briere told me today. "I heard a lot of good things about him.

“Actually, he’s smaller than me. We all know what he did in college. I’m definitely pulling for him. To see a guy his size, I’m sure he had to battle through a lot of adversity moving forward in his career. I’ve gone through the same thing, kinda. You obviously, feel for a guy like that.”

Here's what Marty Biron had to say:

“He’s really quick. Has a low center of gravity. It’s tough to get him off the puck, to get him neutralized. I used to hear a lot about him when we had rookie camps and all that. He has really good hands and speed.”

FLyers better show up early against these Sabres or they will be in big trouble. Buffalo is really breathing down their necks right now.

And one more thing. The power play needs to get going. It's 3-for-19 for the month of February and has slipped from 2nd overall in the NHL to 4th. Not a big drop, but a drop nonetheless.
