Flyers Fall Short

If you read my reports on CSNPhilly.com, you know I did not like the Upshall for Carcillo deal. Yeah, I get the whole salary cap thing. But, in my mind, the Flyers are close - just like Pittsburgh was close last season.

When a team is close, you need to make a move for a stud player. There are all sorts of conjecture as to what the Panthers wanted from the Flyers for JayBo.

I have been told that Braydon Coburn and Claude Giroux were among the choices, Count Jacqula, asked for. If that were the case, Flyers GM Paul Holmgren made the right decision.

But I want to go back to what Kimmo Timonen said the other night in Boston. That the club needed depth on defense. Kyle McLaren of a decade ago was a worthy pickup. This McLaren has been injured and in the minors. How can he help the Flyers in the long run?

If you don't upgrade the goaltending, you've got to have some studs on defense to surround him with and Timonen needed some support back there.

My take on Carcillo? Dress him in black leather, put him in South Philly, maybe eating a cheese steak at Geno's and you've got your next Fabian!

Here's what Carcillo had to tell me today at the skate:
