Terrific scrimmage from James van Riemsdyk with 4 goals during the 7-3 win over the Washington Caps rookies/prospects.

Nice breakaway at the end for a goal and terrific move, as well.

“Usually, that’s my go-to move in college hockey and it’s the first time it worked,” JVR told me. “I tried it a few times with the Phantoms last year and it didn’t work. I figure it’s got to work somehow, so I just tried it and it went in.”

Flyers coach John Stevens was impressed.

“The thing most pleasing to me was he wasn’t just hanging around the perimeter scoring goals or finesse goals," Stevens said. "He really dug in fought for a loose puck that ended up a goal. There was a loose puck behind him on another goal and the last goal, the breakaway was high-end. He showed the competitiveness we wanted to see.”

JVR got another goal in the second period. It's 5-3 Flyers after 2 period.

Kevin Marshall had another slapper and this time, it should be his goal. No one touched it. To my count, I have seen this kid take 5-6 slap shots since the mini-camps and he scored or the puck was redirected 4 times.

Just got the score sheet and they changed goal to Tomas Sinisalo on that shot from Marshall.

Good fight early with Matt Clackson and Washington's Ryan Jasinsky. I thought Clackson was going to go with Joe Finley earlier but the officials broke it up. BTW: Clackson's agent, Rick Curran, watching this scrimmage here.

Gotta be honest here, James van Riemsdyk looked very impressive in the first period of the Flyers-Caps rookie game.

JVR has a goal and an assist. Kevin Marshall showed us another of his booming slap shots that JVR redirected.

It's 2-1 Flyers after 1 period.

Kinda weird that the Flyers still have not "officially" opened training camp - they don't hit the ice until Sunday _ and yet this afternoon we will have some Flyers posing for the cameras.

Today, between 1:45 and 2 p.m., the NHL and Flyers will unveil the Winter Classic jersey at Skate Zone. I have no idea what the jersey looks like.

All I know is that newcomer Ian Laperriere will join Danny Briere and Braydon Coburn for the unveiling, along with top Flyer brass, including club chairman Ed Snider.

This is going to be streamed live on CSNPhilly.com and also on the FLyers' team website.

Wonder if we're going to get something out of Boston, showing a Bruin in the jersey?
