7am Edit: Who the hell needs to transcribe notes when ITV captured all the interviews. It's worth it for everyone here to watch the Brendan Witt video. As I said, I wasn't able to get anywhere near Witt in the postgame, so seeing the ITV video is priceless. Especially watching him tell a reporter they asked a stupid question. DOH!!! Good for you Witter. There is also video of Captain Doug Weight and veteran winning goalie Dwayne Roloson. Both crediting the same factor in the wins. Get the puck to the net, good things may happen. Then there is Scott Gordon's presser from Room 6 where he cracked a smile and a joke. The question about Sutton came from none other than hockey playing Blog Boxer Mike Schuerline from Islesblogger.com. Much better reception than the guy who was told to "look it up" by Witt.
So okay then! Go to the Islander's main site and spend 15 minutes watching the videos and hear their quotes for youself. Sure, it's not the same thing without the smell in the room, but you'll enjoy them. And don't forget tonight on blogtalk radio at /crashthecrease I'll be talking Islanders and then PuckDaddy himself will be talking with HockeyGuy AC. 9 pm, check it out.
Midnight: Brendan Witt did something he hasn't done in a very, very, VERY long time: He was a + on the score sheet.
The man who last season was vocal about Scott Gordon's system and style and didn't seem to fit in started out this season seemingly unchanged. No wait. His hair was longer and I think he has another tatoo. But other than that, his game was still unsuited. After 13 games, he was already a -7. To be fair, so is Bruno Gervais and Richard Park.
Recently, something happened. The Islanders started to win. Yes, win. And as everyone knows, winning changes everything. They're not making the mistakes they were making. Oh, not to say that things are perfect in Uniondale, but the hard work is finally paying off.
When was the last time Brendan Witt heard his name chanted at the Coliseum? I can't tell you, but that's what happened tonight. After Witter earned two goals in the second period the crowd that didn't need to see a World Series game tried to will a hat trick for Brendan as he spent most of his time defending his own zone while the Oiler's net remained empty.
Sadly, he came up empty. But I'm sure that didn't change the confidence that this win and those goals will give him. I don't know why there was no hard hat on his head in the locker room. I couldn't get near him in the media scrum, so I have no quotes. But I'm sure there will be plenty in every media outlet that cover Islanders hockey.
John Tavares scored the first Islanders goal of the game as the line of Tavares, Moulson and Weight continue to dominate the Islanders line-up. It's pretty funny to look at the sheet and see (5)s after each of their names. Can you say "click"? Okay, so Doug Weight got his 6th assist point on Witt's second goal, but the game summary I'm looking at still is says alot about that line.
Also, I mentioned on my 7thwoman blog that the face off percentage continues to dominate. Coincidence that they're winning? I don't think so. Josh Bailey was 5 for 7 wins, that's a 71% win ratio. Frans Nielsen had a 67% win percentage with 8 of 12 face off wins. Nice!
Rolie had excellent rebound control and a lot of help from his team mates. Moulson actually swept a puck out of Rolie's crease while he was being pinned to the ice by an Oiler and Dougie basically stopped one puck from getting to Roloson with his face. Ouch. There was a brief scare as the 40 year old goalie lay sprawled on the ice and Penner took a Interferrence on the Goaltender penalty. But he got back into position and continued the game. (Okay, he's growing on me.)
The only downside of the entire game is that Roloson could have had a shut out had the puck not deflected off Martinek giving Moreau the Edmonton goal at 11:02 of the 1st. Brian from The Fourth Period said that is not the first time that's happened to Martnek. I asked him what would that error be in baseball. He said an E-GAD. Okay, I thought that was funny.
Andy Sutton was getting physical every chance he could and while Tavares receives more grief than he gives, he went right into a scrum when it seemed necessary. The Oilers were called for seven penalties while the Islanders were called for two. That's a stat that is so very difference from last season when I would be screaming "Just stay out of the BOX!!"
Oh yes, winning is so much more enjoyable than losing well and learning while doing it.
Quotes tomorrow when I have the wherewithall to transcribe. For now, #isleswin should start being a Twitter trending topic along with one I would like to throw in #scottgordonwaright.
Night Isles Nation, go to bed smiling. The Isles win and the Yankees go back to the Bronx.
PS: Shamless plug, I'll be on blogtalk radio's CrashTheCrease tomorrow night at the 9 pm hour with Anthony Curatolo at www.blogtalkradio.com/crashthecrease talking Islanders winning hockey and Matt Moulson. Check it out.
