Math Lesson: 6-6-6 Isles vs. 2-12-3 Canes

The Carolina Hurricanes have more at stake tonight than the NY Islanders. They have great fans that can’t be happy with the team’s current position of being on the precipice of breaking a record for the longest losing streak. I know how it felt when the Isles lost a handful in a row. I wouldn’t want that feeling of losing 14 in a row. Yikes!!

On the other hand, I don’t really like that sinister set of numbers for the Isles wins of 6-6-6. Let’s put a heavenly “7” at the beginning of that set. Thanks.

The startling (and somewhat stupid) news that Kyle Okposo may be heading to Carolina to rejoin the team leaves me unsure as to who will be in or out of the line-up tonight. I’ll try to get info out of the PR staff later today. (HAHAHAHAHAHHAHA…. Yeah.) But the biggest questions will come in the details of the numbers.

The Islanders rank at 17th in the NHL on the Power Play, the Canes are at 29th. There is equality on the Penalty kill as the Isles are at 79.1% to the Canes 79.8%. Is that a case of “competitive balance”? But the Canes have far more penalty minutes at 315 to the Isles 209. So that has a lot to do with it.

With Carolina’s losing streak it also means that none of their players have any personal streaks going while the Isles have Bergenheim, Moulson, Streit, Tavares and Nielsen all looking to add to their point streaks.

I need Moulson to continue to be on a goal streak. If you haven’t seen it, I’ve got a bet going with hockey icon Steve Carlson regarding Mighty Matt’s possible goal total by January. You can check out my drunken foolishness at my blogspot at http://www.7thwoman.blogspot.com.

All I know is that the Isles need to play this game by the numbers and come out on top: More goals, less penalties, more points. It’s really as easy as 1-2-7!!!
