UNIONDALE, N.Y. _ Dare I say it?
These days, it takes a bit of courage to say something brash like this: the Flyers appear to have turned the corner.
Yeah, I know, every time we think or say this aloud, reality smacks the Flyers back down to earth.
But this three-game road trip to Tampa Bay, Carolina and tonight in Uniondale where the Flerys won 2-1, has me convinced that the worst is over.
Now here's the rub. The Flyers are coming up on the halfway pole and only have 38 points. The ONLY way they are going to make the playoffs at this point, given how insane the Atlantic Division is (read: competitive) is to grab 4 of 6 points for every three games the rest of the season.
The Florida Panthers didn't make the playoffs last season and had 93 points. That says it all.
The Flyers have blown so many points this season, it's not even worth repeating but they simply have to sweep 2 points against every divisional foe for the foreseeable future to give themselves a chance. The Eastern Conference is too close.
But I like what I've seen. Jeff Carter's line with Danny Briere and Scott Hartnell is alive again.
“The one big thing Lavi said and even Homer [general manager Paul Holmgren] is to relax and play,” Carter told me tonight. “We started a streak in there and slumping. Guys grip their sticks, come in and it’s not much fun to come to the rink.
“We’ve really tried to come in with a smile on our face and work hard. Just have some fun go out and play and it’s starting to turn around.”

BTW: How many of you out there agree w/me that the NHL should have the Flyers-Bruins in Boston no later than WEDNESDAY and that the Flyers should not be playing the Rangers 2 days before the Winter Classic? How do you have a "build up" to a game with just one team in town to advance it?
