Youth, Incorporated is a non-profit organization with a mission to “advance the mental, moral and physical development of boys and girls through a variety of sports, recreational activities and camping.” They sponsor sports leagues in basketball and inline hockey that covers a wide swath of Tennessee, from Bellevue and West Nashville to Lavergne to Spring Hill. During the recent floods, their rink in Bellevue was destroyed. Inline hockey is a key driver in kids getting involved in playing hockey. Many of middle Tennessee’s young ice hockey players get their start in rinks like these, testing their interest before lacing them up on the ice.

The flood recovery effort in Tennessee has been nothing short of spectacular, neighbors helping neighbors, friends helping friends, strangers helping everywhere and the hockey family has jumped in with both feet. It is a testament to the spirit of the Volunteer State. In that spirit, it is my pleasure to announce the “SlapShot Radio Rink Rebuild” event.

We’ll be gathering at the Vandy/Midtown location of Pie in the Sky Pizza for a Stanley Cup Final watch party one week from tonight on Wednesday June 2nd. We’ll get things going with happy hour at 5pm, a live remote of SlapShot Radio at 6pm then we’ll settle in to watch game 3 of the Finals on one of Pie in the Sky’s many HD televisions. We’ll have a Silent Auction with some great memorabilia and merchandise, we will also have donation buckets to collect as much as we can to help rebuild the Bellevue inline rink. The address for Pie in the Sky is 110 Lyle Avenue, just off West End Ave.

If you’ve never checked out a Pie in the Sky location, well, you are missing some great food, awesome wings, great pasta dishes, incredible salads and of course, they make one outstanding pizza!

So join us… next Wednesday night at Pie in the Sky. We will have a great time, to help out a great cause.

Random Notes

- I know that scheduling can be a hassle, but why are we waiting so long to get the Finals going? Both series were wrapped up by Monday, why not start on Thursday instead of waiting till Saturday?

- Given the Flyers appearance in the Finals, HBO has decided to add additional plays of their excellent documentary “Broad Street Bullies” about the 70’s Flyer teams that won the only two Cups in their history. Check your local listings if you haven’t seen it.

- NHL playoff TV ratings in the US continue to be strong on both Versus and NBC. A final with an Original Six team in Chicago and a large market in Philly, the finals should continue this trend. I will be curious to see how game 2 does on Memorial Day.

- I believe the key player in this SCF will be Dustin Byfuglien. The Flyers will need to figure out what San Jose and Vancouver could not, how to contain him.

- Alexander Radulov was named the MVP of the KHL… pick your derogatory remark.
