- Before the Deluge? - This SCF has two teams that haven’t won the Cup in quite awhile, Chiacgo’s last Cup was in 1961, the Flyer’s last Cup was in 1975, long droughts to be sure, but the parallels don’t stop there. Both teams have been to the finals five times since their last Cup, Chicago in 1962, 1965, 1971, 1973 and 1992, Philly in 1976, 1980, 1985, 1987 and 1997.
- Looking for Clues - Plenty of signs can be read on both signs that point to their team winning. On the Philly side, the last two SCF teams to change coaches mid year won the Cup (Jersey in 2000, Pittsburgh last season) and they are playing against a team with Marian Hossa, who has played for the losing team in the past two finals. For Chicago fans, they can point to the progressive steps of success needed for a championship team, they can also point to Marian Hossa’s past playoff domination over the Flyers with 1.5 PPG average and an undefeated record against Philly.
- Win One for the… Lapper? - The Flyers Ian Laperriere has played 1144 games in his NHL career and is making his first trip to the SCF. Only two active players have played more games without a championship.
- Experts? - The SCF predictions are rolling in… of the six ESPN “experts” four are picking the ‘Hawks, two picking Philly. Oddsmakers are calling Chicago as a heavy favorite, TSN commentators are split evenly.
- Here Comes the New Boss - The hiring of Steve Yzerman as GM of the Lightning is another good move in the attempt to rejuvenate the franchise. He has done the internship necessary, working for Ken Holland in Detroit, and by all accounts, has the tools needed to be successful.
- OT: Will History Be Made… Again? The Boston media is already on this, a column in today’s Boston Globe by the Bob Ryan is asking the question… It couldn’t happen again, could it? After the Bruins epic collapse, blowing a 3-0 series lead to the Flyers in the conference semi’s, another Boston team is showing signs of doing it as well. The Boston Celtics jumped out to a 3-0 lead in Eastern Conference finals over the Orlando Magic to the chants of “Beat LA!” Well hold on a second… after last night’s Magic win the series is now 3-2 and the series returns to Boston… and the drumbeat begins… I may need to tune in to game six tomorrow night.
Last Night – The podcast is posted from last night's show, we talked to Blackhawks radio play-by-play man John Wiedeman and to Flyers TV color analyst Steve Coates, PuckDaddy brought his particularly warped take on the Finals as well. All on SlapShot Radio’s podcast.
