SCF: Best of 3 & Isles Aside

I’ve never watched horse racing, but the Belmont Stakes was on last night and with no hockey, a Yankee game that dragged on to 14 innings before a Toronto run mercifully ended it, and absolutely ZERO interest in the Mets game, I left the ponies on the television. How is there so much pomp and circumstance for a competition that lasts no longer than a fleeting thought? I don’t get it. I then proceeded to nod on and off to three hours of “America’s Got Talent.” Welcome to my life.

Thankfully, we puck-junkies have Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals on NBC tonight to sit and stress over; and I seriously mean STRESS. The consensus has always been this will be a long series. According to Sarah Baicher of CNSPhilly.com, this is the first time the Blackhawks have lost two in a row since the post season started. They are the more desperate team and “The Flyers are now the more confident team.” Who’d a thought?

The bad thing is no self-respecting NY Islanders fan can willingly root for the Flyers. (Ex-coach Peter Laviolette notwithstanding.) Watching the Flyers tie the series at two on Friday night made me actually begin to lose interest in the entire ordeal – on and off the ice. Could the Flyers REALLY be the “Team of Destiny?” They seem to think so according to their press-box swag.

I love the questions he brings up in his entry for Versus. Will “Q” break up the dynamic duo of Kane and Toews? Seems everyone is asking the same question. Thing is, will the mountain-with-a-mouth named Chris Pronger actually care what lines they are on? Or will he just scout the GW puck in the final seconds? Anyone else tired of “puck-gate”? Could there be MORE to the “curse of Marian Hossa”? Is this really Karma on ice?

Fanhouse’s Christopher Botta brings up the excellent question: Has anyone seen Dustin Byfuglien? (I can’t believe I actually spelled that without looking it up first) along with some good notes, quotes and coverage.

I have to say, the good thing about the social media explosion in Hockey coverage is that it has given us all an abundance of coverage by new and exciting voices in forms we've never had before. We each have our own favorites, but the choices now are just countless!

For tonight, all I know is the Blackhawks need to get something (ANYTHING) going. Whether it is line changes or attitude and systems adjustment, something has to give. Everyone wants to win that prize, but who wants it more? Who DESERVES it more? As the entire playoff series under dogs, the Flyers have everything on their side. (I can't believe I just said that.) If their names are etched on the cup, it will be an amazing part of hockey history. If they aren’t, well – it was a great run and the higher seed prevailed. Only time will tell.

So, here’s to a Sunday night filled with Hockey on NBC, starting with a pre-game show at 5 pm with Anthony Curatolo from The Hockey Guys on www.blogtalkradio.com/thehockeyguys, a Live Chat with XM’s Shawn (Big Country) Lagivne starting at 7pm, some interesting TwitBits from those covering the game live in Chicago all night long and hopefully a Hawks win.

Yeah! I said it! I’m still rooting for the Blackhawks!

Isles Aside: In this morning’s Newsday, Jim Baumbach has a brief article under the title “Islanders: Former owner still believes in Hartford” Sadly, the title (as usual) is misleading. If you don’t actually READ the article, you immediately assume there’s a link between Hartford and the Islanders. The good thing is that within the first paragraph that connection is broken by reading that Howard Baldwin “…does not see relocating the Islanders as an option right now.” The wording “right now” does leave the idea open ended. Perhaps Mr. Baumbach wrote the story just to include the second half of the article news that Charles Wang is STILL waiting to hear from the Town of Hempstead as to what they deem acceptable in the Uniondale parcel. He did note that Kate Murray said she expected to present the ToH’s plans as early as June. Turn the page on your calendar Kate, it IS June.

I suppose any mention of the continuing plight of the Islanders is a good thing. Anything that can light a fire under the local government is appreciated by the fans. Even Gary Bettman on his weekly radio show on Thursday had to take 3 minutes to answer a concerned fan’s questions regarding the Lighthouse project and the Islanders. Even with the attention placed on the impending draft and the possibility of a future star, Islander fans are most concerned with where their team will be after 2015.

Time flies. The question has been pending for years. The only constant has been – Kate Murray.
