Looking back: Draft of 2006 |

So, what did we get with the 13 picks the NY Islanders had in 2006? Well, for one -- Kyle Okposo. Yep, chosen at 7th overall, the Isles drafted Kyle. Hard to believe that was four years ago.
But also in that draft, the Islanders 2nd pick was 60th overall and with it they selected Jesse Joensuu who played 81 games last season between the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and the Isles. He scored 15 goals and 34 assists but only 1 goal came with the Isles.
The third choice in 2006 was Robin Figren at #70. Last season he played 62 games with Bridgeport with only 3 goals and 4 assists.
At the #100 spot, the Isles drafted Rhett Rakhshani who played 41 games with the University of Denver where he scored 21 goals and 29 assists. He did play 5 games with the Sound Tigers last season and had two assist points.
At #108, the Isles drafted Goalie Jase Weslosky. I can’t seem to find any stats for him for last season.
At #115 was Tomas Marcinko whom I had seen at prospect camp and also on the Sound Tigers squad. He played 54 games for Jack and had 4 goals and 2 assists. I think we were hoping for more.
Doug Rogers was drafted at #119. He attends Harvard. He played 28 games with them last season and had 6 goals and 6 assists. Harvard? Smart man.
Shane Sims was the Isles 8th choice at 126 overall. Last season he scored 5 goals and 12 assists for Ohio University.
At #141 was Sweden’s Kim Johansson. Perhaps because he’s still playing in Sweden they haven’t updated stats on the website I was using, but I don’t see anything after the 08/09 season for Div 1 in Sweden. **Note: Thanks to HBer Parlapiano who hooked me up to a site for Swedish Players. Johansson did indeed play last season and actually didn't do too badly. 37 Games, 7 goals and 20 assists for a total of 27 points. Do you start to wonder if these guys can handle the heavy 82 game NHL schedule? I do.
But look who was taken at #160 in the2006 draft: Andrew MacDonald! Amac played 46 games with the Isles last season and had 1 goal and 6 assists and a ton of praise from the organization.
Brian Day waited around until his name was called at #171. Last season he played for Colgate U in 34 games with 21 goals and 15 assists.
The Isles second to last pick in 2006 was Stefan Ridderwall who played in 52 games in Stockholm last season. And finally, when it was all over Troy Mattila was chosen at #190 who played for Dartmouth College and had 1 goal and 1 assist.
Maybe tomorrow I’ll look at 2007 draft class. That was only FIVE players. We’ll see. But by this time next week, we’ll know all about the Draft Class of 2010.
