Random Notes
- The NHL Held Hostage – Day 16 – Reports out of LA have the Kings and Ilya Kovalchuk close to a deal. Reports also say that Kovalchuk is requesting that the brown M&M’s be removed from the negotiating table snacks.
- Depth signing yesterday as the Predators signed Jamie Lundmark to a two-way contract. Best case scenario is that he is this year’s Joel Ward, worst case would be a solid center for Milwaukee.
- The news of the current ownership group nearing settlement with the bankruptcy court to assume the 27 percent of the team formerly owned by Boots Del Biaggio is great news for Pred nation. News that points to a stability that never gets promoted. Guess that’s why you haven’t seen it in the Tennessean. God forbid a positive story gets printed... and of course David Shoalts in the Globe and Mail spins it in his normal inaccurate way.
- Pavol Demitra is heading to the KHL. You have to admit, the owners of the KHL have set up a helluva retirement plan for aging NHL players.
- Countdown to Arbitration – Nine days to go before Blackhawk’s goaltender Antti Niemi’s scheduled arbitration date. With the Blackhawks struggling with the cap, and certainly not being helped by the Sharks driving up the price on Niklas Hjalmarsson, the negotiations may get interesting as the hearing date draws near. I would love to be a fly on the wall for that hearing…
- The NHL Network is replaying the Hawks/Pred series… last night was game 5. I didn’t want to watch… I really didn’t, but I was strangely compelled. Thirteen seconds… sheesh.
- Speaking of the NHL Network, the “Raising the Cup” series has been a lot of fun to watch.
