The Flyers got the last of their restricted free agents under contract yesterday when they re-signed Darroll Powe to a one-year contract that will pay him $725,000. That is a $205,000 raise from his 2009-10 salary.
Although the 25-year-old forward did not contribute anything offensively in the playoffs, he mixed in a little timely offense early last season (6 of his 9 goals were tallied in the first 17 games of the regular season) along with his speed, forechecking tenacity and contributions on the penalty kill. An early candidate to will the club's Pelle Lindbergh Memorial Award (most improved player), Powe was set back by a shoulder injury in late November that caused him to miss the next 16 games. Upon his return, he provided a solid fourth line complement to Blair Betts and Ian Laperriere, although his offensive contributions were few and far between.
With the revelation that Betts (who has chronic shoulder problems, and underwent surgery after the Stanley Cup Finals) could miss the first two months of the regular season, the resigning of Powe became a more urgent priority for the club. Powe can play either center or wing. When the Flyers have a full lineup intact, Powe will battle Jody Shelley for the final starting lineup spot, assuming that Dan Carcillo plays on the third line and the club does not resign unrestricted free agent winger Arron Asham or another player.
