I have to keep today's blog brief due to another writing commitment, but I will blog at length on opening day tomorrow.
The Flyers made an on-paper roster move in order to get their roster under the player limit in time for the deadline. With the club having decided to carry eight defensemen on the opening night roster-- as a source within the club said all summer would likely be the case -- the team has loaned Andreas Nodl to the Phantoms.
Ian Laperriere has been placed on IR, and will eventually be moved to LTIR. Michael Leighton temporarily remains on the active roster, but will eventually be placed on IR or LTIR. Once the club gets a handle on its IR situation, Nodl will be recalled. The Austrian is likely to start the season as the 13th forward, anyway, as Jody Shelley will be in the starting lineup.

Last spring, I had the opportunity to host a pair of in-game chats on Versus.com during the Stanley Cup playoffs, while pinch-hitting for usual host (and Hockeybuzz alum) Brian Metzer. I had a lot of fun, and was happy to see so many HockeyBuzz regulars join in to chat during Game 7 of the Flyers-Boston series as the Flyers successfully completed their comeback from a 3-0 deficit in both the series and the deciding game.
Tomorrow on Versus.com, Brian will be hosting
season opener chats both during the NHL Premiere Games in Europe in the afternoon and during the Flyers-Penguins game at night. I encourage Flyers fans to join in and let themselves be heard (which is rarely a problem).
Also, as of today, my Daily Drop blogs resume on an every-day basis at Versus.com. Today's blog looks at
3 NHL teams that could surprise this season (Carolina, St. Louis and Tampa Bay).
Finally, this week's Across the Pond at NHL.com looks at the wealth of
hockey history and tradition in the Finnish city of Tampere. Earlier this week, the Minnesota Wild downed SM-Liiga team Ilves in an exhibition game prior to the opener in Helsinki. Last year, the Florida Panthers dropped an exhibition game via shootout to Tampere's other team, Tappara.
