Another stunning development in Flyerdom ...

Not only will Leighton need surgery for what has now gone from bulging disk to herniated disk, but he admitted it first came up in the playoffs but he did not complain about it to the Flyers until he was in severe pain during summer workouts.

AFTER he got his contract.

GM Paul Holmgren wasn't happy about not knowing this last spring.

“We didn’t really know that much about it until he had an issue in the summertime, and we’re still not certain it was related to this,” Holmgren said. “It is what it is now. What’s cropped up here lately is the weakness in his legs. The doctors just want to get ahead of it, and they think this is the best way to deal with it right now. So that’s what we’re doing.

“Obviously I’m not happy about this now, but we certainly didn’t know this in the summertime when we were going through the contract negotiations.

“It’s something that crops up from time to time with a hockey player and that’s the way we view it. They all need to do their core work to strengthen their stomach and their back, and we spend a great deal of time doing that.

“This is just one of those things, and that’s why we’re going down the road we’re going down. We get it taken care of and get him back playing.”

Good thing Sergei Bobrovsky looked good in Pittsburgh, eh?

This is now 2 players - Leighton and Ian Laperriere _ who concealed injuries last spring and it';s had a negative impact on the Flyers going into this season.
