That's what Flyers coach Pet Laviolette called Monday's 2-1 loss in Columbus when I said to him that his team didn't show up until the final 10 minutes of the third period.
Every year, every season, every Flyers coach since I have been on this beat, has gone through this in October.
The Flyers don't show up.
I give Matty Carle credit last week for saying aloud what everybody in that dressing room knows to be true but few are willing to admit it: the games now have a "different" mentality because it's not the Stanley Cup Final and the "sense of desperation" is no where near where it was all last June.
I have no idea how long it's going to take this group to find its ways but one or two periods, or one win isn't going change things for the long term.
A lot of fans in Flyerdom say they need to make a major trade to shake things up. I can tell you that the team is still trying to re-sign Jeff Carter. Negotiations are going slowly and there is no hurry.
Yet what we saw in Columbus was inexcusable.
How many guys didn't even take a shot? How about six players.
Laviolette and several players, Chris Pronger among them, talked about the lack of "compete."
Typical no compete: Nik Zherdev has the puck on the right boards going into the Columbus zone in the second period and get checked off the puck at the boards. He skates away into the slot and watches instead of battling to regain possession.
That kind of "lack of compete" was seen throughout the game.
With the Phils season over, with the Eagles season about to go down, as well, the Flyers are not going to fly under the radar much longer. All eyes are gonna be on them ... sooner, than later.
