Wish we had a photo of Sergei Bobrovsky in our files here. They need updated at Hockeybuzz because he is the man of the hour and figures to be for the long term, as well. (edit: here you go Tim!)
Everywhere you go this season the tune has changed with the Flyers. People say, 'looks like the Flyers have finally found a young goalie.'
Last season, everywhere you went, all you heard was, 'there's a reason Michael Leighton has bounced around.'
We all know what Leighton and understated Brian Boucher did for the Flyers in 2009-10.
We are all seeing now what Bobrovsky can do for the Flyers this season.
He basically stole 3 of 4 points for the Flyers this weekend. He's been stealing a lot of points for the Flyers these days.
He almost tied Pelle Lindbergh's Flyer rookie record for consecutive wins (7).
Most of all, he's given Flyer fans HOPE that he is the "next" one. A legit diamond in the rough.
The skeptics will say that the NHL is still discovering "Bob and the shooters will figure him out.
Once that happens, the game shifts back to him to make adjustments to regain the edge. Right now, I think the kid is learning every day on the job and learning well. He stopped 12 of 13 shots against Alex Ovechkin and Alexander Semin in Sunday's 3-2 overtime Flyer loss to the Caps in which he deserved a win.
Hell, he deserved one of the 3 stars of the game and didn't even get that.
“He’s getting more confident with the size of the rinks, the shooters, the way things move around here," coach Peter Laviolette said of his 22-year-old goalie.
"You got to think about it coming in with having no experience at all, as far as the NHL goes and the travel and what goes on. I think the more comfortable he gets, the more comfortable he will look in the net.
"Every day is an experience day where he gets more comfortable. His play has been the same but he’s getting more comfortable doing it.”
I asked Chris Pronger what he learned about Bobrovsky during the 6-game win streak which has become a 7-game point streak with the OTL thrown in.
Pronger gave us the line of the night which was repeated by other FLyers:
“He’s definitely proven to make believers out of everyone in here, that’s for sure,” Pronger said of BOB.
One of the Russian reporters talking to Bobrovsky after the game told me that Bob didn't realize that a loss in OT was still a "loss" even though his team got a point. When told it was a defeat nonetheless, BOB shrugged his shoulders.
“For 22 years old, he’s level-headed. He was disappointed after this game but he said, ‘what are you going to do?’ When good things happen, he just rolls off it," Sean O'Donnell told me.
Love that Bob!
