Meltzer's Musings: 2/13/11

Peter Laviolette's method of handling the goaltending rotation this season has generally been to keep rolling with the hot hand. As such, I fully expect Brian Boucher to be in net tomorrow when the Flyers take on the Kings. (Reminder: the start time has been changed to 3 PM EST from the original 7 PM).

With three games in the next four nights, four in the next six and five in the next eight, you also have to figure that Sergei Bobrovsky will get at least one of the back-to-back games during the team's swing through Florida.

The big question: Do the Flyers start Bobrovsky against Tampa -- a club that has had the rookie's number so far and chased him from the net after one period in the last two meetings between the teams -- or do they use him against Florida?

My view is that if the Flyers think Bobrovsky is the more likely of the two goalies to be the starter in the playoffs, they should try to get him over the hump against the Bolts. This will be the final meeting of the regular season between the teams, and I t think Bobrovsky should at least get one more crack at Tampa this season. If the two clubs are to play each other again this year, the most likely scenario would be a showdown in the Eastern Conference Final.

First things first: Terry Murray's Kings have played much better of late after enduring a tough stretch last month. With the Flyers having played just once in eight days by the time the puck drops tomorrow, they could once again find themselves in the position of being a bit out of synch offensively in the early going of the game. Philly compensated effectively against Carolina, coming out with a lot of energy despite not being able to solve Cam Ward until the third period. A similar effort will be needed against LA.
