*****
There is finally some Flyers hockey to talk about today, as the
annual game between the Flyers and Capitals rookies takes place at the Wells Fargo Center (5 p.m. start time). Free tickets are still available and required for admission. If you can't make it to the game, it is slated to be broadcasted via live webcast on the
Flyers official site.
The Flyers are slated to have both Brayden Schenn and Sean Couturier in the lineup. In addition to 2011 first-round pick Couturier, later-round selections Marcel Noebels (signed to an ELC earlier this summer), Nick Cousins and defenseman Colin Suellentrop are likely to play. It also appears that Oliver Lauridsen and newly signed Blake Kessel will work together as one of the defense pairings. Left winger Tyler Brown, whom Paul Holmgren has describes as one of the most pleasant surprises at rookie camp, will also play.
The complete Flyers rookie camp roster is
here. Many of the players who spent a full year in the pros last year, such as Zac Rinaldo and Eric Wellwood, will not be playing in this evening's game.
Unlike last year, when Sergei Bobrovsky was one of the main attractions, there are no organizational goalie prospects who will wear the orange and black for this game. Brad Phillips was drafted out of the USNDT program in the 7th round of the 2007 Entry Draft and left Notre Dame after two collegiate seasons to play in the CHL last season. The Flyers have not signed him but invited him to rookie camp. The other goalies on the roster are 19-year-old London Knights goaltender Michael Houser (a native of Wexford, PA) and 18-year-old Ottawa 67's backup goaltender Shayne Campbell.
The Capitals' roster is
here. Washington's top prospect, 2010 first round pick Evgeny Kuznetsov, is not on the roster, as he plays for Traktor Chelyabinsk in the KHL. Likewise, well-regarded goalie Braden Holtby (who made his NHL debut last season), is not on the roster. Among those on the potential game day roster, the ones to watch are left winger Stanislav Galiev, center Cody Eakin and defenseman Dmitri Orlov.
Norwegian goaltender Steffen Søberg, who was the Capitals' top pick (4th round, 117th overall) in the 2011 Entry Draft, will not be playing. He returned home to Oslo earlier this month. According to Swift Current coach and general manager Mark Lamb (a former Flyers player), Søberg is dealing with personal problems that must be resolved before he can play this season. The goalie has
denied that the issue is anything serious, saying that he simply didn't want to be in North America right now.
I will not be back in Philadelphia until Monday, so I won't be attending this year's game.
