Holding Court

Remember how Peter Forsberg used to hold court in the dressing room?

How about Jeremy Roenick?

Danny Briere always has a crowd. Well, "had" a crowd.

Now the crowd is all dispersed around Jaromi Jagr's locker stall every day. It's a big crowd. Bigger than what we've seen before.

It begins with the Czech reporters. A half-dozen or so. Then when they finish in their native tongue, it's our turn.

Jagr loves it. Unlike other players of the past, doesn't seem to mind doing multiple media scrums.

Briere now moves aside quickly and gets out of Jagr's way. Reporters kidded Briere about what happened when Sami Kapanen had to sit next to Forsberg.

Kapanen was so pissed off about all the reporters blocking his stall, he got some hockey tape - white - and created a large, square box around his stall. He called it, the "no reporter zone."

I'm told Briere is considering doing the same.

Jagr talked about a lot of things today.

And when we were done, I quizzed him on the side about Ilya Bryzgalov.

He had mentioned how important the "right" goalie was to win a championship. He talked about the Bryz.

I reminded him that not a lot of people ever thought Tom Barrasso was a guy who could win a Stanley Cup. And that unlike Bryzgalov, Terrible Tom had a terrible temper and really dislike the media and everything about it.

Jagr agreed that Barrasso wasn't anything near the gregarious soul that Bryzgalov is. I mean can you see Barrasson portraying a character from Scarface like Bryz did today?

Flyers are loose. Bryz, Jagr and Max Talbot - the big three free agents from the summer - are pumped for tomorrow's home opener against Vancouver.

And BTW: Talbot is a Steelers fan (like me) and said it's going to take him a while to warm up to the idea of rooting for another football team.
