The Flyer could have been going home from Pittsburgh tonight as the 4th seed in the Eastern Conference.
Instead, win or lose, they will remain in 5th place because of a shootout loss on Saturday to Ottawa.
We've been saying for a while that the 4-5 playoff match-up was destined to be Flyers and Penguins. Nothing has changed.
"The two points are extremely valuable," coach Peter Laviolette said after Saturday's 4-3 SOL.
These two games against the Pens will say a lot about who might have the edge in the series. I am convinced whoever wins the series will be playing in the Eastern Conference finals.
“Are you sure we’re going to face them?” Laviolette challenged a reporter about meeting the Pens.
“I’m not quite sure of that yet. I’m going to plan on the game, I’m going to focus on that, the two points that are at stake. Try to get our team to do the same thing, focus on the two points and continue to push forward through the end of the schedule here.”
Claude Giroux is looking toward this game today.
“ Yeah. Last game here against Pittsburgh obviously was pretty intense and we were able to get the win in overtime," he said.
"I mean, they’re a good team, I had a chance to watch them play yesterday and they can make plays, they’re very dangerous offensively, so I think we have to make sure our boys are ready to go.”
How important are these last two games against Pittsburgh going into post-season?
“I think its important to be able to play our best hockey against them and…It’s kind of weird when you have to play them regular season and you know you’re going to play them in the playoffs," Giroux replied.
"Its’ going to be a big game for us, especially on the road—I think we’ve been doing a pretty good job this year on the road and we’ve got to make sure that we do the same things [today].”
Sergei Bobrovsky will again be in goal. He is 4-0 lifetime in Pittsburgh.
“Every game needs to be won no matter what the standings show," BOB said.
His record here?
“There’s no way to explain that. I don’t have an explanation.”
