A number of us around the Flyers were a little apprehensive in May and even this month when Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said more than one that he expected to re-sign Matt Carle and perhaps cash in on Carle's desire to remain here vs. accepting more money elsewhere.
Unless you have already gotten that on paper, it's a dangerous thing to say. Most GMs would not have said that openly. It can come back and bite you.
And it now appears Holmgren has been bitten. Carle is headed to free agency this weekend. I talked to his agent, Kurt Overhardt, and he thinks his client needs to test the waters.
The reason? Look at what Dennis Wideman just got in Calgary after the trade & sign with Washington. If Wideman is worth $52.5 million, Carle is worth more. Anything over $5 million is not cap friendly to the Flyers right now, no matter how much Carle likes playing here.
Lotta fans don't like Carle. But my retort there is ... who are you going to get for less dollars right now who is better? And given there is NO Chris Pronger, given Kimmo Timonen is constantly worn out at the end, given Andrej Meszaros back will now be a cautious issue because of disk surgery ... do you really think the FLyers are better off without Carle?
