Meltzer's Musings: Saturday Phantoms, Titans, Euro Games, Prospect Updates

FLYERS IN EUROPE: TODAY'S GAMES (WITH LINKS)

Matt Read will make his Allsvenskan debut today for Södertälje SK, centering a line with French national team forward Damien Fleury and young HV71 loaner forward Jesper Thörnberg. The game starts at 10 AM eastern U.S./Canada time. There is no webcast of the game available but live updates in English are available here.

Jakub Voracek is in action for HC Lev Prague today, as the team hosts SKA St. Petersburg (which features Ilya Kovalchuk, Maxim Afinogenov, Petr Prucha and ex-Flyer Patrick Thoresen). Game time is 11 AM. There is a free webcast available.

YESTERDAY'S RESULTS

Wayne Simmonds scored a goal in Eispiraten Crimmitschau's 7-4 loss to the Fischtown Penguins in German Bundesliga action yesterday. Simmonds also racked up 29 minutes worth of penalties, including a fight with Ralf Rinke and a corresponding game misconduct penalty.

The Players Tour, organized by Max Talbot and Bruno Gervais, held a game last night in Sherbooke, Quebec. Ex-Flyer Simon Gagne was among the goal scorers.


PHANTOMS UPDATE

The Phantoms fell to 0-2-0 on the preseason with their second loss of the week to the Albany Devils. Yesterday, in a closed-to-the-public game at the AmeriHealth Pavilion in Newark, the Devils beat the Phantoms by a 2-1 score.

Adirondack yielded two shorthanded goals to Scott Parse and Jacob Josefson and struggled on the power play to lose 2-1. Cal Heeter made 24 saves in a losing effort for the Phantoms. Andrew Johnston was credited with the lone Adirondack goal.

Brayden Schenn was one of the few key Phantoms players who suited up both in Tuesday's game at the Skate Zone and yesterday's scrimmage in Newark. Among those who did not play yesterday were Sean Couturier, Zac Rinaldo, Erik Gustafsson, Zac Rinaldo and Brandon Manning. Eric Wellwood, who did not play on Tuesday, played yesterday.

Here are the players the Phantoms dressed yesterday:

Goalies: Cal Heeter, Scott Munroe (DNP)
Defense: Oliver Lauridsen, Blake Kessel, Zack Fitzgerald, Tyler Hostetter, Jeff Dimmen, David Banwell.
Forwards: Brayden Schenn, Eric Wellwood, Harry Zolnierczyk, Mike Testwuide, Shane Harper, Andrew Johnston, Tye McGinn, Ian Slater, Rob Bordson, Marcel Noebels, Matt Mangene, Sergei Sentyurin.


The Phantoms head to New York today to take on the Connecticut Whale. As with yesterday's game, it will be played only in front of team officials and will not be open to the public. Today's match will be the Phantoms' final preseason game.

Tomorrow, the Phantoms will hold their final practice at the Skate Zone and then depart Voorhees for Glens Falls. The regular season opens on Saturday, Oct. 13th with a home game against the Portland Pirates.


TITANS UPDATE

With the Phantoms in Newark yesterday, the Flyers' ECHL affiliate opened its abbreviated preseason in Voorhees last evening. The Trenton Titans had a rough first game, getting thumped, 5-1, by the Reading Royals.

Niko Hovinen, who started for the Phantoms on Tuesday, remained in Voorhees to start the game for the Titans. He stopped 24 of 29 shots.

Reading went 4-for-9 on the power play last night. Julien Cayer, Adam Cromrie, Tyler Gron and David Vallorani all scored on the man advantage for Reading, while Yannick Tifu scored the team's lone even-strength goal.

Trenton trailed 5-0 until it 5-0 Pier-Olivier Morin potted a Ryan Hayes rebound to get the Phantoms on the board with 6:27 remaining in the third period. Trenton went 0-for-4 on the power play, including a failed 5-on-3 opportunity in the opening minutes of the game.

The two teams will play again this evening at 7 PM at the Sovereign Center in Reading. It will be the final preseason game for both clubs.


FLYERS PROSPECTS -- TODAY'S GAMES (WITH LINKS)

Defenseman Fredric Larsson was in action today with the Brynäs J20 team, taking on the Västerås J20 squad in SuperElit action. Brynäs won the game, 3-2, with Larsson assisting on what proved to be the game-winning goal. Note: Brynäs frequently streams its J20 games for free at Bambuser; however, there was no stream for today's game. A boxscore and lineups from today's game are available in English here.

Enforcer prospect Derek Mathers and the Peterborough Petes are on the road tonight to take on the Barrie Colts. Game time is 7:30 PM eastern. A free radio broadcast (Peterborough announcers) is available or you can purchase a live webcast for $6.99.

Playing for the second straight night, Nick Cousins and the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds host the Sarnia Sting tonight. Game time is 7:07 PM eastern. A free radio broadcast (Soo announcers) is available or you can purchase a live webcast for $6.99.

Taylor Leier remains out of the Portland Winterhawks lineup while continuing to recover from a torn abdominal muscle. He is not ready to play yet. However, barring a setback, he is slated to make his season debut at some point during the team's current six-game winning streak, which began last night. The Winterhawks are in Moose Jaw tonight.

Shayne Gostisbehere and Union College take on Merrimack today at 7:00 PM.

Michael Parks and his University of North Dakota teammates play an exhibition game against Manitoba. Game time is 8:05 PM. The game is listed as being available on Fox College Sports [DirecTV 608/623/626].

Nick Luukko and the University of Vermont team have an exhibition game today against Concordia. Game time is 6:30 PM eastern. A free streaming radio broadcast will be available here.

Valeri Vasiliev is still with MHK Spartak and not the USHL's Waterloo Black Hawks. He played both yesterday and today for Spartak. Today, he was minus-two in a 5-3 loss.

FLYERS PROSPECTS -- LAST NIGHT'S GAMES

2012 first-round pick Scott Laughton had two-thirds of a Gordie Howe Hat Trick last night, scoring a power play goal and dropping the gloves with Billy Jenkins in the Oshawa Generals' 6-4 win over the Kingston Frontenacs. Teammate Colin Suellentrop had an assist and was plus-two (Laughton was minus-one), in addition to taking a minor penalty for cross-checking in the first period.

Nick Cousins recorded an assist in Sault Ste. Marie's 4-2 win last night over the Kitchener Rangers. For the season to date, Cousins has 11 points (4G, 7A) and 8 PIM in the team's first six games.
