Max Talbot signed with Ilves of Finland's SM-liiga today.
"I'm happy to be here," he said in a video that ran on Broad Street Hockey. His agent, Pat Brisson, confirmed the signing to me.
I was mystified why Talbot chose now. And at least one NHL player in Europe sent me a text asking me if Talbot knew something ominous about the CBA talks and that is why he was signing.
Afterall, it's rather late to sign and given the positive vibes of the CBA talks in NYC, the signing didn't make sense unless ...
Talbot wanted to get some competitive games in and prepare for an expected NHL season late this month or December. And that apparently, is exactly what happened.
"I would consider going overseas, just to get a little competition and practice with a team and get ready – ‘cause you never know when [the NHL is] gonna start again," Talbot told CNSPhilly.com's Sarah Baicker recently. "It could happen really quick, faster than people think."
