Don't See Forsberg Going Anywhere

Since the middle of last week, I have had close to a dozen calls from people asking about the future of Peter Forsberg.

The beat writers in Montreal are convinced he will end up there at the trade deadline next month. No matter how hard I try to convince people that Foppa's focus is finding a right skate boot that fits him properly and not leaving the Flyers to win an easy Stanley Cup somewhere else.

Forsberg told me last week he will return to Sweden after the season to work on the foot and a skate boot the entire time to find a solution, if need be. He is hoping to find it with Peter Hedstrom, a longtime friend who is also involved in his sandal business over in Europe. Hedstrom runs his own foot clinic in Sweden.

“Hedstrom has been helping me a few times,” Forsberg told me. “I have to keep it going. Sometimes, I wish I could chop off my right foot and put a new one on. I can’t. So, I have to go through this. It’s getting better. I think it is. I am hopeful. Yet on the other hand, whatever happens in my future, I don’t know.”

Last week, the rumors were all about Forsberg and Montreal. BTW: He has a no trade clause.

“I came here and I wanted to be here,” Forsberg said Friday afternoon. “Look, it’s been a tough year for everybody. Rumors start when teams are bad like we are. Everybody thinks we’re going to miss the playoffs. Now the rumors start coming out.

“It’s about me right now, but it will be about everybody soon. But me going to Montreal? It hasn’t been talked about. My focus is to try and play and try to win games.”

I don't see Forsberg going anywhere at the trade deadline. I don't see him giving the Flyers the OK to make a deal, either.

What if the Flyers asked Forsberg to waive his no-trade clause?
“It hasn’t happened and I am not going to think about it until it happens,” Forsberg said. “There is nothing I can do if they [Flyers] want to [talk about trading me]."

Twice last week I asked Foppa if he owed the Flyers a year given he has spent so much time out of games, he will end up missing the better part of a season over a 2-year deal.

“Owe them a year?” Forsberg asked. “I know have been struggling and stuff, but I don’t want to say anything else about it. It’s like I said before. I need to figure out my foot and then we see what happens. For now, I go out and play as hard as I can for the Flyers. That is what I have done.”

My story in the Inquirer identified SA Hedstrom, the Swedish doctor who works with athletes on groin problems and has done work with the Swedish National Team.

That was the Hedstrom I was given which makes sense from his groin problems, but not for his foot. The Hedstrom Foppa will be meeting is boyhood pal, Peter. Thanx to Jan Bengtsson, my buddy in Sweden, for emailing me this morning about Peter Hedstrom.
