9:34 pm: With less than 30 seconds remaining in the third period, Semin gets to the empty net sealing the deal.
Kevin Puolin left the net with almost two minutes left of the third for the an extra attacker and couldn't keep the puck in the Canes zone.
This is beyond a disappointing outcome.
9:27 pm: What happened? I closed my eyes for a moment and Sanguinetti managed to put one past Poulin to give the Canes the lead?
Are they really going to lose another one at home? really?
8:39 pm: Another marginal call for interference put Matt Martin into the sin bin late in the second and E. Staal bats the puck out of the air after it bounced off Travis Hamonic to make it 2 - 1. Forty-five seconds later, his brother Jordan made it 2-2.
This is not how the Isles or their fans that came out on a Sunday night expected this would go after the first period.
8:22pm: Isles n the power play with ten minutes left of the 2nd period.
7:49 pm: If you need any addition entertainment this evening, checkout Brendan Witt's Twitter feed at @WhiteMooseRanch as he discusses the 'machine' that is hockey. Very telling.
7:45 pm: Some scrambling and and a game of "hot potato" with the puck due to a delayed penalty on a Visnovsky hooking call. But the good thing is, Travis Hamonic was back on the ice.
The Canes get a penalty for hand on the puck during the face off tihng so for a little over a minute the teams will be at even strength and then the Isles will have a short power play.
7:35 pm: uh oh. It's not Martinek, but Trvavis Hamonic that hobbles off the ice after a hip to knee collision. This is not good.
7:31 pm: John Tavares earns his 13th goal of the season banging it off the post and behind Ward. No surprise, it was a pass from Matt Moulson that started the rush.
7:18 pm: Matt Moulson scored his tenth goal of the season, even though it looked like Ward actually made the save and then it just magically trickled between his legs and over the line. John Tavares with the assist -- of course.
Travis Hamonic is the unfortunate victim of a bad call by all four refs for a puck over the glass call -- delay of game. It was crap. Isles PK out for the kill.
11 am: Riding the wave of a shut out win last night in Buffalo, the Isles jump right back in the fray at home today at 7 pm against the Carolina Hurricanes.
It will be Kevin Poulin's first game this year as an Islander giving Evgeni Nabokov the night off to rest. It will also be the first time we will see Radek Martinek in an Isles sweater this season as he replaces Finley in the line-up tonight.
The Islanders tweeted out a great quote by Radek Martinek "Watching while you're hurt is hard. When we're winning, I want to be out there and when we're not, I want to help." He's excited to be back in the line-up tonight. I hope the home crowd gives him a warm welcome back.
While Jack Capuano was happy with the way the team played last night, he stressed they can't get away from playing within their structure. "We can't play as individuals." He is also confident in Kevin Poulin who has played well for the Sound Tigers and noted Poulin's competitive nature. He will certainly be looking to make a statement tonight as he looks for the Isles number one goalie job for NEXT season.
Last night Garth Snow spoke with Howie Rose about the decision to send Rick DiPietro to Bridgeport. He did not mention that Rick was given the weekend off. Or at least I missed that part. He did mention that he was disappointed as any player would be. So that answered my unanswered question of whether the decision was actually suggest by Rick himself. Silly me.
