Who To Amnesty?

The big discussion these days on the Flyers is who to amnesty this summer.

Do you go with Ilya Bryzgalov or Danny Briere?

I am surprised at just how many tweets and emails I get that show pretty much a 50/50 split on this.

Everything I see and hear so far tells me that Briere will be the one. His rather candid interview earlier seems to support that, as well. His cap hit of $6.5 million is suddenly a major liability to the Flyers next season, especially, at a time when the cap is going down by $6 million and when the club needs to restructure its defense.

The defense is going to cost the team more than a few bucks. Maybe a lot of bucks if they can swing a deal with someone for a young, impact guy now. There is no one out there in free agency who can help the Flyers.

Mark Streit is an older player but the Flyers could have had him a few years ago and didn't move on him which suggests to me they won't move now, either.

Regardless of how you feel, Briere has been a class act here with the Flyers.

While fans may want to amnesty Bryzgalov, he remains the owner's choice of goalie and Ed Snider does not give us easily on decisions he makes. Which is why I could see Bryz getting one more shot here.

And I will be the first to throw this out. The St. Louis Blues have 4 restricted free agent defensemen, including their big two - Kevin Shattenkirk, Alex Pietrangleo and they also have Jay Bouwmeester's $6.7 million cap hit. How will they afford all three?

Don't be surprised if the Flyers make a move toward one of the Blues' d-men. It makes perfect sense.
