On Pressers, Camp, Et Al

Just had to put that Ilya Bryzgalov pix up there one more time, especially since we don't have a Ray Emery one yet.

Strange week with the Flyers. They held a couple of developmental practices - that's all they were and nothing else you could sink your teeth into _ at Skate Zone, went to the Jersey Shore one day, then returned to the ice on Thursday to wrap things up.

The Tuesday practice was odd because nearly all the media was at Wells Fargo Center for the Big Intros of Vinny Lecavalier, Emery and Mark Streit.

The FLyers didn't want that presser at Skate Zone. They wanted it separate from the camp to designate how "special" they thought this was. They seldom open up the "Hall of Fame" room for pressers but they did on Tuesday.

As much as I wanted to see the Flyers make a bold move this summer with an RFA sheet to Alex Pietroangelo, I don't see it happening.

Sources tell me that GM Paul Holmgren did, however, contact Nashville counterpart David Poile to inquire whether the Preds would move Shea Weber once July 19 came around. The Preds have more than $$ to go to the salary cap maximum but management has an internal budget it has to live by.

Poile told Holmgren since he already had to pay out the $10 million bonus in June, he wasn't moving Weber. If the new CBA allowed for the FLyers to trade for Weber and reimburse the Preds $10 million, I think the Preds would strongly consider it. Alas, the CBA doesn't allow it.

If the Flyers can add another winger - maybe Simon Gagne _ at some point, they will. They still have $2 million to lose off the cap but they have plenty of time to do it.

It would not surprise to see Gagne at camp, if he has no takers, and then see him signed to a contract AFTER the Flyers are able to use Chris Pronger's LTIR cap dollars in October.

Rather interesting that even though the Flyers have Skate Zones in the Northeast and even Atlantic City, they are headed to Lake Placid for 4 days of camp in September while their own building in Voorhees undergoes some renovations.

I always felt that players enjoyed going outside the area for a week or so in camp to break up the monotony of practicing in the same rink every day in camp, knowing you are going to be at that very, same rink every day in the regular season, as well.

Ken Hitchcock understood that fully and that's why he had camps at West Point and in Alberta. It was good for the player's souls. It got them pumped for the end of camp going into exhibitions and provided a needed distraction.

I get the feeling coach Peter Laviolette could care less where camps are so long as he accomplishes everything he wants from a training camp.

Big difference.
