The Vancouver Canucks have added on to their recent string of activity as the team has claimed Ryan Stanton off waivers.
Stanton, 24, was placed on waivers by the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday with the intention of sending him to Rockford.
The 6'2, 200lb defenseman is coming off a solid campaign in the AHL where he recorded 25 points, 126 penalty minutes and posted a +16 rating in 73 games.
The Canucks felt Frankie Corrado needed to go to Utica and play big minutes and Andrew Alberts had a pretty horrendous preseason, so it isn't surprising to see the Canucks adding to their blue line.
Stanton signed a two-year extension this past summer that will carry a cap hit of $550,000 if he plays at the NHL level. The first year of his contract is a two-way deal and the second year is a one-way deal where he'll make $550,000 regardless of whether he's in the NHL or AHL.
I like the move by Mike Gillis to claim Stanton. He will provide more depth, youth and physicality to their blue line and if not anything else, he should be an upgrade over Alberts.
In the event Stanton doesn't pan out, the team can waive him. If he goes unclaimed, they have another defenseman for the Utica Comets. If he is claimed, they give back an asset they added for free.
This is a no-risk move by Gillis that could pay off if Stanton can serve as a decent 6/7 defenseman.
