One night after the Flyers were thoroughly embarrassed by the Capitals ...
One night after Ray Emery shamed himself and the Flyers with his assault on Braden Holtby ...
One night after the Flyers plummeted to as low as you can go ...
They rebounded with a stunning, 1-0 victory against the Devils in a building that hasn't been very friendly to them since it opened - Prudential Center.
Emery faced just 14 shots - one shy of the Flyers all-time low total for road games (13). His defense saw three new pairs from the previous game and incredibly, the Flyers were not credited with a single giveaway, something that has not happened since the 2009-10 season.
That Emery could stay focused in the game while only sporadically seeing shots was amazing.
"A night like tonight it’s not that hard to stay focused after a game like last night," Emery said. "You challenge yourself and you could see it in the whole team that we were embarrassed. We were gonna show how much we wanted to play tonight.
"It’s just important to have a bounce-back effort after last night, I think. It really was a complete team game from start to finish.
"The most encouraging thing was the third period where we really took it to them. They didn’t get anything. They got two shots. We needed that after last night."
Ah yes, the third period. Max Talbot mentioned in Dallas on Friday night how different it felt to play on a club (Avs) that could go into the third period ahead by a goal, lose the lead, then buckle down and win the game - a direct shot at the Flyers' inability to do that last season and especially, this season.
Asked about believing in themselves in the third period, and then actually protecting a 1-0 lead coach Craig Berube said, "It helps. Every time you get another win, tight game, 1-0 or whatever it is and you play a strong period, that helps. It gives you confidence and makes you believe."
Berube changed all three defensive pairs, putting Braydon Coburn back with Kimmo Timonen; yanking Luke Schenn and Erik Gustafsson from the lineup, and inserting Hal Gill, whose chrome had to be polished from sitting and collecting dust for 12 games, plus Andrej Meszaros.
The Gill-Meszaros pairing was effective, too.
"I try to be as steady as I can and be composed under pressure," Gill said. "It’s tough when it’s a tight game.
"That’s the kind of greasy, road win we want. We want to play like that. We want to wear them down and battle. We needed that win tonight and it was good to get that."
