WHITE SHELVED WITH TORN PECTORAL

Signed by the Philadelphia Flyers to a one-year, two-way contract earlier this month, center Ryan White while have to wait to get his 2014-15 season underway. Yesterday, the Flyers announced that White underwent surgery to repair a torn left pectoral suffered in a workout last week. There is no current timetable for his return.

The gritty 26-year-old White has played 141 games in the NHL for the Montreal Canadiens. Philadelphia signed him as an unrestricted free agent on Aug. 7 to compete in training camp for a fourth-line spot with the team.

There is no guarantee of an NHL roster spot for White, which is why the contract is a two-way deal. The injury setback increases the likelihood that he will be assigned to the AHL's Lehigh Valley Phantoms when his season eventually gets underway.

FRIDAY QUICK HITS

* 2014 second-round pick Nicolas Aube-Kubel continues his torrid QMJHL preseason for Val-d'Or. Last night, the forward scored the game-tying in the third period of his team's 6-5 shootout loss to Gatineau. In three preseason games to date, Aube-Kubel has racked up six goals and one assist.

* 2013 first-round pick Samuel Morin is in QMJHL preseason action tonight for the Rimouski Oceanic. The team takes on Acadie-Bathurst at 7:30 p.m. EDT.

* 2014 first-round pick Travis Sanheim and sixth-round pick Radel Fazleev are in WHL preseason action tonight for the Calgary Hitmen. The team takes on the Regina Pats at 9:00 p.m. EDT.

* 2014 fifth-round pick Oskar Lindblom is in action today for Sweden's national U20 team at the Four Nations U20 Tournament in Jönköping. The host country takes on the Czech Republic. Game time is at 12:30 p.m. EDT. A live stream of the game is available for $10 US on Livearena.com.

* Jody Clarke, the daughter of Hall of Famer Bob Clarke, posted on Facebook that her son, Peter White, has begun school at the Shattuck St-Mary's boarding school in Faribault, MN. Here's hoping that someday there will be an obligatory reference to SSM's famous hockey program made by Pierre McGuire in conjunction with a broadcast featuring "third-generation NHL player Peter White."

* Flyers Alumni Birthdays: Tim "No Rookie" Tookey, a perennial minor league scoring star of the 1980s to mid 1990s, turns 54 today. Among his 106 NHL games, Tookey dressed in two regular season games for the Flyers in 1986-87. He also dressed in 10 playoff games in the Wales Conference semifinals and finals, notching one goal and four points. Tookey is best known for his many years with the Hershey Bears, for whom he topped to 100-point plateau three times. His best minor league season was a 51-goal, 124-point campaign for Hershey in 1986-87. When the late Gene Hart used to host a radio call-in show about the Flyers, an insistent caller used to go on the air virtually every show to ask when the Flyers would finally call up that "Tookey kid."

Former Flyers forward Doug Sulliman turns 55 today. Originally a first-round pick of the Rangers in the legendary 1979 NHL Draft, Sulliman was claimed by the Flyers from the New Jersey Devils in the waiver draft at the end of the 1988 preseason. Sulliman finished his 631-game NHL career as a sparingly used player for two seasons for Philly in 1988-89 and 1989-90. He dressed in a combined 80 games and scoring nine goals and 19 points with just eight penalty minutes. A groin pull in 1988-89 and a rib injury the following season kept him out of the lineup for stretches. He was also a frequent healthy scratch.

Mike Murray, a center, turns 48 today. Murray was a minor league prospect whom the Flyers acquired from the Islanders in the spring of 1986 in exchange for a 1986 5th round pick (Todd McLellan, who is now the long-tenured head coach of the San Jose Sharks). Murray had a lengthy career in assorted North American minor leagues as well as in Europe, playing as late as 2002-03. However, his one and only NHL game was played in a Flyers uniform in a 3-1 loss at Madison Square Garden on March 15, 1988. Murray skated on the fourth line.
