In this edition of the hotstove we discuss whether anyone other than Alexander Ovechkin will score 50 goals in 2015-16.
Todd Cordell
Since 2012 Ovechkin is the only NHL player to score 50+ goals in a season and he's done it multiple times. He's that good. I think he'll have some company this year, though.
Steven Stamkos has scored 60 in the past so we know he is capable of doing it. We also know this is a contract year so there's extra motivation. Factor in the additional goals that will come in 3-on-3 overtime and I could see him reaching that mark.
Phil Kessel is riding shotgun with Sidney Crosby and has Kris Letang feeding him stretch passes so he's as good of a candidate as any.
I know 50 goals is a lot to expect from anyone but when all is said and done I think two players will reach that plateau this year: Ovechkin and one of the other two guys that I mentioned.
James Tanner
Oh yes. The NHL is set to have an explosion of offense because 3 on 3 goals and assists will count towards individual point totals, where as shoot-out goals do not.
I can't see there being all that many shoot-outs anymore because of how much ice they'll be with only six skaters on it, so that alone should let us get back to a few 50 goal guys and 100 point players.
Stamkos, Kessel, Ovechkin, Hall and Perry will all score 50 is my prediction.
