Last night came proof of a changing of the guard on some level to what amounts to sport reporting.
The New York Islanders website has a call out for an official blogger competition. Those picked will be given press passes and a special blog table to work from during the games.
The rise of bloggers in hockey has been recognized even by the most stubborn: hockey organizations. The New York Islander's rise in news stature actually has everything to do with blogs. The Isles beat reporter Greg Logan's blog is one of the most popular on all of Newsday's online offerings. Fan interest during the Isles scramble for a playoff spot created tons of page views and hits. Newsday responded with more coverage in the back pages at the end of last season. A symbiotic relationship was born, and the Islanders have been much more aware of it since, thus the result being the NYI Blog Box.
In the great divide of fan demands and news organizations lesser offerings, the hockey blogger has bloomed. With the Web 2.0 being about interactivity, this site and others, have ridden a huge push for fan interaction and the desire for more information. Now hockey organizations are not only beginning to blink, but to recognize its power and popularity.
It isn't truly a change of new guard and old guard. Its really a change where writers, fans and interested parties have reached a digital crossroads. Either they must cross that divide, or be left standing as more and more hockey readers look to the web for information...and not just read...but to comment, write, and react.
