After St.Petersburgh SKA had been eliminated from the playoff contention Ilya Kovalchuk said his goodbye to the team and the Kontinental Hockey League, announcing his intention to continue playing in the NHL.

Even though rumors spread quickly that Ilya Kovalchuk will join the New York Rangers organization, the player himself isn't so sure about that.

''Many people I know have been calling and asking, congratulating me on something. My answer to them is that Russian media is doing a great job, found me a place to sign, signed a contract for me and even know for how long I'm going to be there'' Kovalchuk said. Later he added that he hadn't even talked to any of the NHL teams just yet.

After leaving the SKA team, rumor had it that player is set to sign a $6,000,000 deal with a term of 2-3 years.

''Of course, the results of the team will be the main priority when I make the choice. I have a big family and of course, we have to figure out where are we headed. One of the kids plays football, other one plays hockey my daughter does gymnastics. We need to consider all the options. There is still a long time until July 1st. We will sit down and think. The most important part is to have interest in my services and it's great that at this point there seems to be.'' Kovi admitted.

''Last year when I spoke with my agent he named a few teams that expressed interest. Three of those teams didn't make the Stanley Cup playoffs. (Writers note: Islanders, Rangers, and Panthers) It's hard to hit it with a team but the most important thing is to go out there and prove myself. I have to play at my level, so the teams would notice me and get interested. I will need to fit in and it's never easy''.
