PHANTOMS UPDATE 9:30 AM ET
Due to an as-yet undisclosed incident, the Adirondack Phantoms have dismissed leading scorer Patrick Maroon from the team. He will no longer be a member of the Flyers organization. He has been sent home and is pending reassignment. Flyers GM Paul Holmgren was in Glens Falls last night, in part to deal with the Maroon situation.
The last-place Phantoms, playing without Maroon last night, were easily dispatched by Wilkes Barre/Scranton by a 4-1 count. David Laliberte scored the lone Phantoms goal.
PREVIEW 9:45 AM
Coming off a solid road win in Pittsburgh last night and winners of three of their last four games, the Flyers (5-4-1) return to action tonight at the Wells Fargo Center to take on the New York Islanders (4-4-2). The Flyers have dominated the Islanders in recent years, but the Islanders finally broke a 15-game losing streak against Philly in their final meeting of last season. The Islanders, who are winless in their last 10 games in Philly, lost 3-1 to Montreal last night at the Nassau Coliseum.
While the Islanders enter this game having lost three in a row, center John Tavares has been red hot, tallying 4 goals over that span. Last night, rookie Matt Martin scored the lone Islanders goal. For Philly, the Danny Briere line and Claude Giroux continue to be the team's offensive spark plugs. Giroux tallied a pair of goals last night, including his third shorthanded goal of the month and a powerplay goal.
Rick DiPietro has been shaky at times this season, as his .882 save percentage and 3.31 GAA in five starts attest. He will get the start tonight for the Islanders, as Dwayne Roloson (2.40 GAA, .914 SV%) started last night. Although the Flyers, as usual, will not officially name a starting goalie until later today, it appears as though Brian Boucher (2.26 GAA, .898 SV%) will get the start. Sergei Bobrovsky (2.69 GAA, .908 SV%).
There is no word yet on whether Nikolay Zherdev will get back in the lineup tonight after being a healthy scratch in Pittsburgh. My projected lineup does not have Zherdev in it, but that's because Dan Carcillo scored a goal last night and Andreas Nodl had another solid game.
