Quick Hits: August 4, 2016
1) Travis Konency scored the lone goal for Team Canada in Wednesday' 2-1 overtime loss at the World Junior Championship evaluation camp in Plymouth, Michigan. The goal was a rather soft one from just inside the right half boards that skipped through goalie Veini Vehviläinen. Earlier, however, Konecny was denied on a breakaway and a followup attempt. Goaltender Carter Hart did not play for Canada, and defenseman Philippe Myers (hip/groin surgery rehab) is unavailable.
2) Team USA grabbed a 4-3 decision to Sweden in Wednesday's other game in Plymouth. Flyers goalie prospect Felix Sandström served as the backup for the Swedes, while Tanner Laczynski did not dress for Team USA. Flyers defense prospect David Bernhard had one shot on goal for the Junior Crowns but did not figure in any scoring. Team USA trailed 3-0 at the first intermission but pushed back for three goals in the second period and a Logan Brown game-winner late in the third period.
3) Big stick taps to former Flyers left winger Scott Hartnell. Recently, 10 Snider Hockey students traveled from Philadelphia to Nisswa, MN to attend the renowned Minnesota Hockey Camps. It was made possible by Hartnell's generosity.
In the meantime, the final Snider Hockey college prep camp of the summer will be held on the week of August 15. in addition to on-ice practices, there will be a campus visit to Ursinus College, a day trip to tackle the ropes course at Outward Bound, and off-ice training sessions.
The 2nd annual Flyers Alumni Fantasy Camp is sold out.
The camp will be held Aug. 19 -22, 2016 in Atlantic City. The Alumni have assembled an excellent group of instructor/coaches this year, including Hockey Hall of Famers Bernie Parent and Mark Howe, along with the likes of Danny Briere and Flyers assistant coach Ian Laperriere.
The official Flyers Alumni website will soon have a camp preview and exclusive photos afterwards of the various on-ice activities, end-of-camp tourney and off-ice festivities.
