While we are all excited for hockey, we can’t forget those who are battling for their lives. Each year, the NHL partners with various organizations for Hockey Fights Cancer Month. While you may be very familiar with the ‘PINK’ you see everywhere, the NHL has opted for a Lavender shade to show their support. You can find many items for purchase to help contribute to the cause, including something sweet. Throughout October, a portion of the proceeds from each pink cotton candy sold will go toward the Hockey Fights Cancer initiative. There will also be $1 donation slips on the Coliseum concourse, and fans who make a donation will have their name added on the Islanders Hockey Fights Cancer Wall.

Now, if you want something really special, you can bid to win these Hockey Fights Cancer Islander jerseys. The bidding starts at $250 each and not only are you getting a unique jersey, they will have been worn by the players during warm-ups at their Oct. 26 game against the Philadelphia Flyers. Bidding is open from Oct. 1-15 and all proceeds will go to the Islanders Hockey Fights Cancer Initiative. Fans with the highest bids will also receive two tickets to attend the Oct. 26 game so they can pick up their jersey.

You have to admit, they’re pretty unique. You’ll stand out in the crowd in these for sure.

If you’re going to Saturday, October 19 game, please wear pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Night. Not to be forgotten, Prostate Cancer Awareness Night is scheduled for Oct. 29, when the Islanders take on the New York Rangers.

The following organizations have been chosen by the Islanders this season:
Smiles for Scott: The Smiles For Scott Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization established to honor the life and memory of Scott Loeb, the son of Debbie and Larry Loeb. Scott passed away in 2005 from medulloblastoma, a form of brain cancer, at the age of 5. The objective of the Foundation is to raise funds to enhance the care and lives of children afflicted with cancer. The Foundation was named in recognition of Scott’s contagious smile.
First Company Pink: First Company Pink is passionately committed to raising funds to support lifesaving breast cancer research. Their focus is to promote wellness and increase public awareness. Their efforts are aligned with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation aimed to fund clinical and transitional research, seeking prevention before a cure is needed.
Greek Children's Fund: Greek Children’s Fund is affiliated with Memorial Sloan - Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) and Schneider Children's Hospital (SCH) to provide financial assistance towards the daily, non-medical needs of Greek, Cypriot and Greek-American children and their families. One of the primary objectives that GCF has achieved is an endowed program at MSKCC that will secure its services to Greek patients in perpetuity.
Steven and Alexandra Cohen's Medical Center: A truly unique facility, Cohen Children's Medical Center is dedicated exclusively to the care of children and committed to providing the most sophisticated, state-of-the-art care in all major clinical areas. Family centered care is the core of their mission. The Cohen Center’s discoveries, advancements and achievements over the years have garnered recognition as one of the nation's preeminent children's hospitals.

A for AMac Effort

It’s been the Andrew MacDonald Media Tour since the Islanders announced that Andrew MacDonald had been named an alternate captain. MacDonald joins fellow alternate captain Kyle Okposo, and team captain John Tavares.

AMac is 27-years-old and in his fifth NHL season. Las season, Andrew was tied for third in the NHL for blocked shots at 123. That was only two away from the lead. Those blocked shots sometimes lead to injury, but AMac is a fighter and with luck he’ll escape injury this season.
Congratulations AMac.

Congratulations also go out to Josh Bailey as today is his 24th Birthday. While Josh did have some time on the first line with Matt Moulson and John Tavares, it seems as if Kyle Okposo will be back in his old spot on JT’s line. Jack Capuano said it’s a good thing to have flexibility at the top and each player lends something different to that line. Personally I think this will be Bailey’s year.
