7:04 pm: Okay, thank you to Joseph Bondi for his guest post and coverage of today's Isles game. He did a great job covering a difficult game. Please check out his post at my www.7thwoman.blogspot.com site. See if you agree with his assesment of the game.
Thanks guys!
5:41 pm: Just noticed on twitter, 15,818 was announced as the total attendance at the Coliseum today. Sorry fans.
3:14 pm: Spezza power play goal. That's all that needs to be said.
3:09 pm: And PA Parenteau gets an eviction notice for running his mouth. This is sheer frustration on the Isles part. Does Frans Nielsen still think they can be in it to win it?
sigh.
2:48 pm: Um, what did I tell you? 4-0 in the second with Poulin chased fromt he net in the first two minutes. Nice.
7 am: Oh yes, the Presidential Race will heat up today at the Coliseum as that big Big Head, plush quartet of walking stuffy toys amuse the kids and adults alike.
Personally -- I find them creepy but I know plenty of people who enjoy watching them chase each other around the ice trying to win. Will Long Island's own Teddy Roosevelt win this year? All depends on who is inside the costume and who won the bet before the game.
Get to the barn early today and at 11:30 am, you and your kids can meet them. Unless they're like my kid was and ran screaming from the Easter bunny. It could happen.
Okay then. So Kevin Poulin and the Isles managed a win on Saturday night to keep the playoff hopes alive.
From David Hochman's game preview:
Otta-My-Way: After beating Carolina Saturday night, the Islanders are one of five teams within six points of eighth place in the NHL’s Eastern Conference. The Sens are currently in seventh place, and with three more meetings on the schedule, and two games in hand, a regulation win in Monday’s game could start to turn the tide even more in favor of the Islanders.
David also had this quote from Frans Nielsen in today's game preview on the main website.
Frans Nielsen on the playoff push: “It’s going to be fun. We’re right in it. We all believe it in here and it’s going to be some big weeks coming up for us. We definitely believe we can do it.”
Frans believes they can, do you?
Last time the Sens and Isles met, Mark Eaton was the unlikely hero potting the over time game winner on his 600th game. Will there be a hero today who will ensure another two points today? We'll have to wait and see.
But the sun has risen on a new day and anything is possible, right? Also possible is that more players will come down with the flu that has infected Evgeni Nabokov and now Kyle Okposo. Who is next.
I've asked every year if the team gets flu shots. I've always been told "yes." Yet every year they come down with it.
Will Al Montoya be in net, or will it be Kevin Poulin? Will Evgeni Nabokov be traded or surprise everyone by sticking around for another season with the Isles. His agent said talks will begin soon.
Art Staple of Newsday has these great quotes from Evgeni in his article from yesterday.
Nabokov also has grown to like what's around him. "I never asked for a trade, I've never done this," he told Newsday two weeks ago. "If they come to me, that's a different story, but they haven't done that. I like what I see over here. I like the direction this team is going. Now a lot of people said last season the reason I didn't come here is because it's a bad organization. That's not true. I didn't come because I didn't think I was ready. I came to training camp ready to go, and I think it's been good."
Game time is 1 pm, but I'll be away from the rink. Check back for Joe Bondi from Knight of Cups blog for his post game reaction to the Isles effort.
Have a great President's Day Monday HBers.
