I have been chasing this rumor since last night as many of you know...

I am still trying to get much of it "on the record" but I can now tell you, at least according to three of my sources, that the team the Penguins are talking to the most appears to be the Atlanta Thrashers. The two obviously hooked up for the Hossa deal last year.

Updated: I am allowed to report now that the deal involves, "top line talent" going each way.
While there have been rumors that the Thrashers would like Malkin for Kovalchuk +, I am not going to say that this is the deal EXACTLY as I am hearing it. In fact I am not yet comfortable confirming or denying either players involvement.

I was always under the impression that Malkin was completely untouchable. And of course Kovalchuk needs to be extended to make this at all feasible, but were this the deal or any part of the deal, it would be interesting to debate the simple concept of how well Kovalchuk would fit with Crosby, versus how well Malkin would play in Atlanta as the #1 Center.

All very interesting. Again, I apologize for the vagueness, but obviously I am protecting sources here.

I am also hearing that the Calgary Flames are talking to the Sabres.

The names I am hearing are Connolly heading to Calgary along with a draft pick and an average prospect for Aucoin and a better than average prospect.

Also this from Eric Engels blog...FOUND HERE

"Bob Gainey had a discussion with Kovalev, and he's decided it would be best for the struggling winger to sit out the next two games and think about how he can get his game back up to a respectable level. He won't accompany the team to Washington and Pittsburgh. Gainey wouldn't admit that Kovalev is on the market, but certainly didn't endorse the idea that he'll have a future with the Canadiens. "Tired and emotionless," is the evaluation from the GM in reference to Kovalev's performance of late."

This reminds me of the time my son wouldn't eat his dinner. "Go to your room until you are ready to be a big boy!"
