Olympic Camps.
I am not surprised by the NHLPA's decision to suggest to players that they not participate in these pre-camps for insurance purposes. While as a fan (and someone who is heading to Chicago to cover the USA Camp) this is disappointing, the reality is that on the outside this actually appears pretty obvious on many levels. The PA is protecting its player here, which is what they are supposed to do. If a player gets hurt at an NHL camp he still gets his money, but the Olympic camps are more a kin to the player getting injured skiing (which is something that most big NHL contracts don't allow)
However, the irony here to many people is that it is the NHLPA that is now the biggest supporter of the players playing in the Olympics, because everytime the players are asked, they say they want to play. Of course they want to play. However the owners also want to protect their investments. They don't pay their stars millions to go blow out a knee at the Olympics. So these camps are time bombs to the owners.
In the end the NHLPA and the Owners are in agreement on these camps. And that is interesting. The players want to play, of course, and I totally get that as well. It is a have your cake and eat it too situation.
While the US team and American hockey fans are psyched for the Olympics, the importance of these Olympics can not be downplayed to Canadians. I am curious to fans of the six Canadian teams, what would you rather have in 2010: Canada Gold or your team winning the Stanley Cup? I think American fans would be shocked by the result of this poll.
Tanguay Update.
Here's the absolute latest. Florida is definitely still leading the pack and may actually get it done today. However, the Islanders are making the biggest push right now. It will get very interesting.
Heatley Update.
While we are sick of talking about it, all the signs point towards a resolution today or in the next few days. It is down to two teams Edmonton and San Jose. The issue is the Oilers are ready and the Sharks are not. Heatley has given a green light to San Jose, and a yellow light to Edmonton. The Sharks are talking to the Bruins and Habs.
Derek Morris.
Morris is likely heading to Ottawa if the Sens cant get the right package for Heatley. The Coyotes and Sabres are also very much in on Morris. Also, the Canadiens could become a big factor once the trade they are working on plays out. The Habs are talking to San Jose, Chicago, and Florida.
Horton
Signed, but the Rangers are interested.
I will have a Kessel and Kaberle update this afternoon as both are on the radar of one particular Western Canadian team.
