Why No 100 Point Players? Should We Raise the Bar? Thursday's Buzzcast

So this morning former NHL Player/GM Brian Lawton Tweeted out the following...

It's a damn good question.

In my opinion it's goaltending. We have never seen save percentage numbers like this. We have probably half a dozen NHL goalies having Vezina caliber seasons...Two goalies are going to be among the top vote getters for league MVP.

We are in "The Goalie Age" right now.

Is that due to talent alone? The butterfly style of playing the percentages? The mere size of players choosing to play goalie? The better equipment? The rules to protect goalies?

As is usually the case the answer is really "All of the Above" right?

This is NOT due to the fact the forwards aren't as good as they once were. We have as talented a group of players in the NHL as we have in the leagues history.

So that begs the question: Should the NHL get involved and try and fix this, or should we just wait for the scorers to evolve as well and figure out how to beat this system?

I don't think this one is on the scorers, because this is really a space issue. There is just not enough room for a puck to find the space to get us 100 point players again. If there were, surely guys like Crosby, Ovechkin, and Tavares would be well over 100 per year.

I am a huge proponent of the idea share with me by Don Granato when we flew over the country during the Vancouver/Boston Cup Final.

Don talked about how he attended a high school hockey tournament in Minnesota and was amazed at how accurate the shooters were and how many beautiful "top shelf" goals he was witness to. When he talked to the coaches about it they all said it was because high school goalies are shorter and the top of the net becomes an option.

Don's theory was all the NHL needed to do was raise the crossbar at the NHL level by an inch or two and the NHL would be 25% more exciting. By not widening the net nothing would change on the ice as far as how much room player had, etc. But the goalies would have to be more aware of high shots and couldn't just automatically cover the low parts of the net...It would open up scoring and require skill at the keeper spot.

I love this idea and really believe the NHL needs to try this in a preseason sometime.

What say you?
