As for Hawk prospects last night:
The Ice Hogs came back to beat Milwaukee (Nashville) at BMO Harris Bank Center in Rockford, 5-3. Stars of the show were Ben Smith (1/1), who appears to have rediscovered his 2010-2011 mojo after a bad concussion taken in preseason last year, Nick Leddy (1/1), Marty St. Pierre (1/1) and rookie Adam Clendening (0/2).
Meriting special focus is Clendening, who has 4 goals and 14 assists in 20 games and is +1. The 2011 2nd round selection, a right-hand shot puck mover, is drawing more and more interest from Hawk fans. This is a player who was one of the lone bright spots on a disappointing US WJC team last year, and is rumored to be highly thought of by Hawk brass.
The only thing working against Clendening right now is a lack of size and physicality in his end. But paired with the right kind of partner (say, a Niklas Hjalmarsson), an argument could be made that he is NHL ready or nearly so.
Smith is tied for the lead in goals on the Hogs and is a stellar +7.
Also last night:
- Philip Danault had 4 points (1/3) in Victoriaville's 7-3 win over Moncton. Brandon Whitney got the win. Victoriaville hosts Dillon Fournier's Rouyn-Noranda Huskies today.
- Mark McNeill had an assist and was -1 in Prince Albert's 3-2 loss to Kootenay.
- Mac Carruth took the loss for Portland, 3-2 versus Tri-City. Carruth allowed 3 goals in 13 shots.
- 2011 7th round selection Johan Mattson, in net for Tri-City (USHL), dropped a 2-0 decision to Sioux Falls. Mattson is 8th in the USHL in GAA (2.55) and 5th in save% (.918)
In Hockey East (NCAA):
- Kevin Hayes has 12 points in 14 games, and is 5th in scoring for Boston College
- Michael Pallotta has 5 assists and is -7 for Vermont.
More tomorrow!
